ABOUT ME

 The Blog

The name "saltySweet" comes from the ever-changing, ever-random happenings and style choices that are made every day in my life. I’ve had to switch-up my style for so many different life-events: from full-time student-athlete, to magazine journalism/ fashion design student, to, now, being a full-time master’s student in the medical field… Talk flipping your wardrobe! Although I’ve had to adjust, I never want to conform my style to fit just one label. My hope is that saltySweet becomes a source for inspiration for people in all different stages of their lives, who base their style off of the way they feel, whatever “flavor” that may be.

In 2010, I started my undergraduate career at the University of Cincinnati with no idea what I wanted to study. My college choice was based primarily off of my decision to play collegiate volleyball (which was such a blessing), but, even so, I knew I wanted to do something creative with my life. I finally stumbled upon Magazine Journalism and Public Relations after a couple of random “signs” being thrown my way in combination with a few encounters with some amazingly talented professors. I fell in love. On top of that, UC is home to a world-renowned school of design (DAAP), and I knew I really wanted to be involved in the arts in some way. My senior year of college, the Fashion Design minor was added, so, naturally, I jumped on the opportunity. You can blame it on my “love of knowledge.”

Throughout my collegiate career, I tried to take every free minute I had (which, being an athlete, was not many) to do internship work. After writing for the College Living section of our college newspaper, I landed an awesome social media/ public relations internship at a Cincinnati design start-up. With those two internships under my belt, I set out to land a big-time internship in the Big Apple. After about what felt like 300 different emails and applications, I finally landed two internships with the Hearst Corporation: one as a fashion intern at O, The Oprah Magazine and the other as a health and fitness editorial intern at Seventeen magazine. After this lucky experience, I was able to learn more about what I wanted to do with my life and what kind of voice I wanted to have as a journalist.  Not only did the internship teach me a ton, but the city itself drove my love of fashion into something so much more than an interest.

In the meantime, my sister gave birth to her first child (my god-child) at just 26 weeks, weighing in at just 2 pounds, 13 inches. If you know anything about premature babies, you know that feeding can often be a major deficit for these little angels. Through extensive work with his speech-language pathologist, Gabriel was able to grow big, tall and strong (just like any little boy should) into his beautiful, blue-eyed self who is now four years old! After being so closely involved with such an incredible experience in combination with a family full of medical professionals, I decided to take some classes in the allied science field. Ump-teen classes later, I added communication disorders into my ever-growing list of areas of study. Through professor influence (in combination with the in-demand job market) and the support of my family and now husband, Matthew (see pictures left), I decided that a two-year graduate school program in speech-language pathology was my next step.

Fast forward about 8 other fashion/journalism internships, 100+ chapters, countless tests, and thousands of flashcards later, here I am, both my husband and I (newlyweds!) in the latter half of our graduate programs, taking things day by day. I realized pretty quickly that there had to be some way for me to get my creative juices flowing. I’ve had some experience with blogging, but this time, I wanted to do it right. So, I called up my dad, told him to get his camera ready (he uses a Cannon EOS 70 D), and we began taking some shots.

I’ll never forget the first time one of my teammates looked at one of my outfits my freshman year in college and said, “You’re kind of, like, a fashionista aren’t you?” It’s funny how random encounters can drive such important decisions in your life. My family and my husband keep insisting that it's never too late to do what you truly love, and I never want to give up on that belief. Thanks for the reads!  Enjoy!
